Did you know???
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of working women has risen over the past century from 5.1 million in 1900 to 66.9 million in 2006. The number of working women is projected to reach nearly 76 million by 2014. As you would expect, women with children are entering the workforce in greater numbers than ever before. Surveys say 70% of these working women have children and 62.6 % have children under age six!
These are the women whose kids ask them, “Mommy, why do you go to work?” How do you answer this question? I am one of these women so I tried to find a children's picture book a couple years ago to read to my daughter on the subject. Instead, I discovered an un-met need in the children's book market. After looking everywhere, I found a only a couple books on the subject. Mommies go to work everyday in this country and there are only a few books that attempt to address this touchy subject. There are hundreds of books about holidays that only happen one day out of the year. Can we not celebrate Moms that make a difference at home and work everyday?
This motivated me to not only write a book, but also to launch a website that provides resources and offers products to make your job as a working mother an easier one!
So who am I?
My name is Kristie Finnan and most importantly I am a full time working mother of two children (4 and 2). I am the daughter of a Mom who worked when I was a child and know first hand the many challenges of having a working mom and being one. I have been a sales professional for 12 years and I wear high heel shoes to work everyday! Luckily, I work for a company on the top 10 list in Fortune magazine for “Best Places to Work” and a company that was voted in the top 20 for best companies for working mothers by Working Mother magazine. I will say that I am very grateful and blessed to work for a company that truly encourages work/life balance. In addition, I am an active member of the SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) and the Womens Business Forum (Doylestown, PA) where I am thrilled to make so many connections with smart, talented and fabulous mommies & women! In addition, I blog with the SVMOMS group for www.phillymomsblog.com
Most importantly, my children are my inspiration and have made my book and MOMMY WORKShop my passion!
Please join us at MOMMY WORKShop. Post a blog, send me a message, tell me what you want and need as a working mom and I'll do my best to find it!
I'd love to hear from you!
